The training need

TfL and the Mayor of London identified training as an important part of their wider plans for a more green and sustainable recovery from the Coronavirus pandemic. The UK’s Capital city wanted to encourage more local trips on foot and by bike.

In pursuit of this plan, Aleido was commissioned by experienced cycle training providers, Cycle Confident, to design and build four short e-learning modules that would empower and equip more people to cycle in London.

With face-to-face cycle training paused due to the pandemic, TfL needed an impactful and free-to-use online solution to develop both basic skills and confidence. TfL also needed a rapid roll-out of green recovery initiatives and the online Cycle Skills course had a deadline of just 3.5 weeks from conception to delivery.

Our bespoke learning solution

Aleido created a bespoke 20-minute e-learning course on basic cycle skills for people who are either new to cycling or just want to refresh their confidence after some time off. Using content created by Cycle Confident, four bite-size modules include easy-to-follow tips and advice that is tailored to cycling in London. The practical topics include how to get ready for the road and perform pre-ride checks, how to start cycling safely on the road, tips for sharing the road and cycling in a group.

The custom e-learning modules were designed to be easy to study on-the-go, with fully mobile responsive content illustrated with video footage and helpful animations. Each module finishes with a brief quiz to check that users have absorbed the key points.

The Cycle Skills course was made freely available to the public, hosted using Aleido's light touch LMS, Svelte. The modules had a promising initial reception, with 500 learners signing up on the first day and over 2,300 completions in the first week.

We are getting lots of positive feedback both internally and externally which is great. The number of people completing the modules show we have a great course.
